Detroit Blog: Hello from Team Leader Amanda
As our team of youth and adults prepares to go on this summer’s servant trip to Detroit, they will be blogging about their experiences. To view other posts from the Detroit Team, click here: http://www.sepayouth.org/category/detroit-blog/.
Hellooooooo Everyone! I’m Amanda Moser, one of the co-leaders of this summer’s Detroit trip. I’m from Garnet Valley, PA (right on the Delaware state border). I grew up in St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Woodlyn, PA and am glad to still call it my home congregation. I’ve been living in France for the past six months teaching English in two middle schools. When I’m not teaching, I like to eat baguettes and cheese, read in the park, listen to music, and do yoga.
One of the bible verses that means the most to me is Matthew 5:16: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” I think it’s a beautiful way to think about all of our actions, and I think that’s what we’ll be doing in Detroit: using all of our talents to glorify God in big and small ways.
I was absolutely thrilled when Molly asked me to be one of the leaders of our servant trip! SEPA servant trips have been some of my best memories over the past few years. I’ve been part of the servant trips to Chicago, South Dakota, and Miami and Key West – and cherish every minute of each trip. One of my favorite memories was sharing lunch with a woman we worked with in South Dakota. A small group of us were digging a trench outside her house so that the rain water would flow away from her home, and though she didn’t have much money, she offered us chips and drinks during our lunch break and took the time to sit and talk with us. I hope that each and every participant of our Detroit Servant Trip will be able to bring home as much as I have from other trips- new friends, new experiences, and a new closeness with God.
